Unilever UK & Ireland named Top 50 Employers for Women
Unilever UK & Ireland has been named one of the country’s best employers for women in the UK in The Times Top 50 Employers for Women 2013, published today.
The list recognises the 50 leading UK organisations which are setting a positive example in gender equality, and assesses companies on equality, diversity and inclusion in the workplace.
Unilever – the company behind Dove, Flora, TRESemmé, Persil and many other household goods – champions career progression for both men and women, ensuring that female employees have access to structured mentoring programmes and positive female role models to encourage progression to more senior roles in the company.
In addition, Unilever promotes an environment which supports employees in balancing their professional and personal lives through a culture of agile working. Also available are job shares, extended leave and enhanced maternity1.
Unilever’s agile working ethos – which enables employees to work flexibly not only in terms of their working hours but also their location – has been celebrated as a way of helping employees to continue working and progressing throughout their career, breaking down the traditional concept of the rigid 9-5 day. Employees are appraised on performance rather than attendance which makes it possible to fit in childcare commitments or exercise into the working day, or work from home or on the move, using technology to stay in touch with colleagues around the world.
Tim Munden, Vice President HR, Unilever UK & Ireland, said, “Not only is being a good employer of women the right thing to do, the business case for a diverse workforce is overwhelming; as a consumer goods manufacturer, we know that 80 per cent of our consumers are women, so of course women are a vital part of our business. We also know that there is an undeniable correlation between a strong record of promoting women into the executive suite and a company’s business success.
“We’re very proud to be listed in the Top 50 but for Unilever it’s not just about being a great employer for women; it’s about being a great employer for everyone. Increasingly men want to play a significant role in their children’s upbringing, and with an aging population, both women and men today have to look after their elderly parents as well as their children. As our home lives evolve, our workplaces need to reflect this to ensure that talented employees can continue to work and support their families.”
Kathryn Nawrockyi, Acting Director of Opportunity Now, said, “All organisations included in The Times Top 50 Employers for Women must be praised for their commitment to the recruitment, retention and progression of their female talent. The high number of entries and high calibre of comprehensive activity made the judging process extremely competitive, but it is clear that this year’s Top 50 are leading the charge on organisational and cultural change, embedding accountability and delivery of activity at all levels, from the CEO to line managers.
“Inclusion in the list demonstrates how businesses are recognising the benefits in utilising, rewarding and progressing the talent and skill of men and women equally.”
