Unilever UK & Ireland launches employee volunteering scheme
Unilever UK & Ireland has today launched a new volunteering policy which will support its quest to be a sustainable business and employer, deepen its engagement with the communities in which it operates, as well as further increasing employee fulfilment and development.
The policy, open to all c. 7,000 employees in the UK and Ireland, provides individuals with company-matched time off to spend time volunteering in the community or with their chosen charity. In practice this means that any permanent UK employee – including head office, factory and research & development employees – can spend one week per year volunteering by using just two days’ personal holiday allowance and receiving three days’ paid time off.*
The new policy supports the specific aim, laid out within the Unilever Sustainable Living Plan, to enhance the livelihoods of farmers, suppliers and employees, as Tim Munden, VP HR, Unilever UK & Ireland, explains: “Unilever’s ambition to be a sustainable business runs through the veins of all employees and every individual has a part to play to ensure that we as company have a positive social and environmental impact.
“The new volunteering policy gives employees more time to make a difference in the world in the way that they want, to have a direct impact on their community through volunteering for a charity or school for which they’re passionate. In this way, we hope to bring the Unilever Sustainable Living Plan, and our goal to be a sustainable employer, very much alive at an individual level.”
Mentoring in local schools, volunteering in a charity shop, assisting an organisation with fundraising events and participating in days of service such as environmental clean ups are all examples of volunteering activities which would be eligible. However, employees are free to choose any registered charity, or local school.
* Unilever provides the first day “free” and matches holiday thereafter, e.g. for employees who want to volunteer for two days, they need use only 0.5 days’ holiday allowance and Unilever will provide 1.5 (one free day and the matched to the employee’s contribution)
