Meet our Manchester household

Unilever recently announced the launch of a nationwide consumer challenge to help UK households lead more sustainable lifestyles and save money on household bills. In partnership with insight and innovation consultancy, The Futures Company, we are working with 12 households across the UK to test practical ways to adapt their daily routines in order to reduce their impact on the environment and cut their bills.

For their first month, the households will be trying to reduce their average monthly food bill by 15% by wasting less food. Why not have a go yourself?

Meet Ruth from Manchester

Fifty eight year old Ruth lives in Manchester with her husband and is one of our households taking part in the Sustain Ability Challenge. She recently retired since being made redundant from 23 years with the NHS and her husband has also just retired. They have two grown up children and three grandchildren.

“This is the first time we have ever done anything like this but we are really looking forward to starting the challenge” said Ruth. “My husband and I are both retired and living off of one pension so our main motivation would have to be to save money. However, it would also be great to do our bit for the environment and I am really looking forward to gaining more knowledge and trying to implement what we learn into our everyday routine.

“I don’t think we really have any idea how to be green, but I don’t think it will be too difficult to change our ways, even my husband!”

Follow our households

To support Ruth and her husband throughout the six months, Unilever will be providing them with a number of tools and tips, including a meal planner and portion control tools. Keep revisiting our site to follow our households and try out the tips for yourself.
