Unilever launches new apprenticeship schemes in the South East
Unilever, which has both its global and UK headquarters in the South East and is behind much-loved household brands including PG tips, Persil, Lynx, Ben & Jerry’s and Marmite, has just opened up applications for its brand new apprenticeship programmes in Business Administration and IT.
Recognised by the National Apprenticeship Service as a Top 100 Apprenticeship Employer, Unilever is already well-known for its Advanced and Higher apprenticeships in Research & Innovation (R&D), Manufacturing/Engineering and Logistics in which some 60 young people are employed at its factories, offices and R&D facilities. The new Advanced Business Administration apprenticeship1 and Advanced and Higher IT apprenticeship2 will provide employment for more than 20 further young people in the South East.3
Tim Munden, VP HR, Unilever UK & Ireland said, “Apprenticeships are fantastic both for business and for the nation. We have already seen with our existing apprenticeships in R&D, manufacturing and logistics that apprentices are talented, ambitious and loyal employees and therefore apprenticeships are a great way for a company to build their talent for the future, particularly in areas where we suffer from skills shortages.
“In addition to this, we want to contribute to the Government’s focus in strengthening the economy and get a ‘lost generation’ back to work.”
Tim continued, “In the UK & Ireland, one of the biggest challenges to sustainable livelihoods today is youth unemployment. It has been shown that extended unemployment in youth damages employment prospects in later life, and those coming from households where no adult works are significantly more likely to remain unemployed and economically inactive than the average. As a large employer, we have an opportunity – and a responsibility - to help young people gain some valuable work experience and develop their skills.”
The Business Administration and IT apprenticeships will last between 18 months to two years depending on the level, as part of which apprentices will receive nationally recognised qualifications and have the opportunity to earn while they learn, with the potential to gain permanent roles upon completion.
Successful apprenticeship applicants will join Unilever later this year, working in the UK head office in Leatherhead, Kingston and the global head quarters in London where approximately 1,500 employees are based. The apprentices will support the UK team of the global consumer goods company, working in a variety of departments including Brand Building (Marketing), Customer Development (Sales), Supply Chain, HR and Finance.
