The Unilever R&D Higher Apprenticeship aims to provide a pipeline of talent for the future needs of the business through a combination of workplace learning and higher education.

Your line manager, buddy and mentor – in addition to the rest of your team – will provide comprehensive and tailored support and training throughout your programme.

Typically three grade ‘B’ passes at ‘A’-level in relevant subjects although offers are made on the basis of interview performance

Packaging Technology

OVERVIEW

Join us as an apprentice at our Global Development Centre in Port Sunlight (Wirral) and you’ll be part of an elite group of scientific and technical professionals whose innovations help millions of people look good, feel good and get more out of life.

The R&D Packaging Apprentices will report to a line manager from the Packaging Design part of the organisation within Unilever R&D UK. They will be involved in projects within R&D that deliver innovative products to millions of global consumers every day. They will experience all of the functional areas necessary to deliver great products and will work within at least 3 key areas over the duration of the Apprenticeship.

THE R&D PACKAGING APPRENTICES WILL:

  • Undertake an R&D Skills Learning Programme
  • Develop R&D skills appropriate to a modern FMCG environment including formulation, processing consumer understanding and manufacturing.

KEY DIMENSIONS

  • The primary focus will be on the development of personal and R&D skills and competencies within the boundaries of the Apprenticeship programme
  • Years 1-5 of the programme requires part time (1 day per week term time and some evenings) attendance at John Moores University to complete a MSc /B-Eng (Hons) in Mechanical Engineering
  • In addition, during Years 1 & 2, successful candidates will complete a diploma in packaging through the Institute of Packaging (IoP). Study for this will require approximately an additional 1 day per week.
  • The overall objective of the programme is to deliver a range of skills and competencies to meet the technical requirements of the business.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Candidates must have a genuine passion for Science and its application to the world around us. Candidates should have two A-level passes minimum grade C (or equivalent qualifications/or be awaiting results) in Mathematics and one other subject (Physics, Chemistry, Computing, Further Maths, Electronics or Engineering). All candidates must have passes at GCSE (or equivalent) in English and Mathematics.

Refreshment R&D

OVERVIEW

Join us at Unilever’s R&D site at Colworth to build and contribute to a number of brands including Lipton, PG Tips, Flora, Magnum, Cornetto and Dove. There are two apprenticeships available at Colworth. The first provides the opportunity to gain a BSc in Foods Science, Chemistry or Chemical Science. The second provides the opportunity to gain a BSc in Mathematics. Both schemes are designed to last five years dependent on the length of the programme of study. Over 600 scientists, technologists, legal professionals and support staff work at Colworth on a diverse range of activities.

It is home to the Global Design Centre for Beverages and Ice Cream, Regional Deploy Centre for Beverages, Unilever Safety and Environmental Assurance Centre, Discover and Critical Functions Capabilities such as Information and Technology for R&D, boasting one of the largest ice cream pilot plans and most northerly tea plantation.

Our apprenticeship scheme offers you the opportunity to study for a range of science qualifications including Foods Science, Chemistry, Biological Science, and Mechanical Engineering. The scheme is designed to last for around five years dependent on the length of the programme of study.

Apprentices are given one day per week during term-time to study; this can with be used for a ‘day release’ method of study or as dedicated study for a distance learning programme. During this time apprentices will be expected to develop both professionally and academically and to provide evidence of this development at set intervals.

ENTRY REQUIREMENT

You need to have Sciences A-levels or equivalent at B grade or above (Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and/or Maths).

Confidence, good communication and a passion for science are also key and you need to demonstrate commitment and initiative to manage the pressures that studying while working will bring.

You must also be prepared to take on work outside of your comfort zone and have a passion to succeed, as well as being a team player as team work is key at Unilever. With Customers and

Consumers at the heart of what we do at Unilever, you should also always be looking for better ways to deliver to them.

QUALIFICATION ACHIEVED

All our apprentices are enrolled on a programme of study which will allow them to study for a BSc or equivalent degree in a given period of time.
