James Barnes - General Counsel
James joined Unilever in 1987, and has since held a variety of roles within the Legal function, before joining the UK and Ireland leadership team as General Counsel in December 2013. James has been involved in most areas of legal practice within Unilever: M&A and restructuring, marketing and advertising matters and innovation claims, competitor challenges, intellectual property creation and protection, general commercial work, and regulatory and compliance, including competition law, food safety, health and safety and environment regulation.
James sits on the UK and Ireland Governance Committee to the Board and holds a number of directorships in group companies. He was a trustee of two of the UK’s pension funds for seven years until taking up his current role, and has held a number of positions within the industry associations in which Unilever participates. James is a member of the General Counsel 350 penal at the Law Society of England and Wales, and is currently contributing to the Society’s GC100 group in relation to proposed reforms of the UK regulatory framework for in-house lawyers.
