£7500 for a cuppa? That's rich tea!

14/03/2005 : PG Tips celebrate its 75th birthday in style today by unveiling a diamond tea bag worth over seven thousand pounds.

The tea bag, thought to be the world’s most expensive, is made of regular PG Tips paper and is filled and bejewelled with diamonds worth over £7500. Of course it also contains PG Tips tea! The beautiful bag has been hand-crafted by jewellery specialists at Boodles.

The diamond tea bag is part of a year long celebration of 75 years of one of Britain’s favourite brews. Jewellery experts at high street designers Boodles, spent three months developing the bejewelled bag and used 280 perfect rocks to create the sparkling finish.

The special tea bag will be part of a touring exhibition ’75 Years of the Great British Cuppa’ that celebrates the history of tea and PG Tips. The tour will visit shopping centres across the UK throughout March (see additional notes).

Pete Harbour, spokesman for PG Tips said, "As it’s our 75th birthday, we wanted to do something special to remind people just how much they love the great British cup of tea."

The tea bag will eventually be used to raise money for Manchester Children’s Hospitals, a charity chosen by workers at the PG Tips factory in Trafford Park, Manchester.
